Anxiety in most people is considered to be a normal state of emotion, but there are times when being anxious can turn our lives into a nightmare. This occurs when normal anxiety becomes an anxiety disorder. Here, there are a number of things that can trigger off such a reaction although the causes of anxiety are as of yet not fully understood or defined.

Many doctors, therapists and psychiatrists have different theories regarding what the causes of anxiety may be. Some state that genetics may be the key to understanding anxiety disorders. Others state that it arises from circumstances thus making it a learned behavior. Still others have no real idea as to why anxiety is caused in the first place.

However we may identify some of the more common causes of anxiety as being brought about by a mental condition, perhaps a physical condition or state. The misuse of drugs as well as the effects of certain types of prescribed medications can also become an anxiety cause. There is also the possibility that a combination of the above causes may lead to an anxiety disorder.

Some of the causes of anxiety are due to certain mental conditions and these may also include other types of anxiety disorders like panic disorder. Then there are the physical conditions that may give rise to anxiety. Palpitations, dizziness and shortness of breath are all considered to be causes of anxiety.

Other reasons can include coffee and caffeine based beverages, amphetamines like speed, an overactive thyroid muscle, abnormal heart rhythms and other types of heart problems. An example of such a heart problem is mitral valve prolapse.

While these are some of the causes of anxiety there are many others that play their part in causing anxiety disorders. Other types of anxiety disorders can themselves contribute towards anxiety. These may be Generalized Anxiety Disorder or GAD, Phobic disorders and Stress Disorder.

Stress from a number of different situations will also cause anxiety. Instances like stress at work, stress from a school problem, stress that results from personal relationships like marriage, stress due to trauma, such as the death of a loved one. Then stress from a serious illness and financial stress can also be contributory causes of anxiety.

Apart from these causes of anxiety you may experience anxiety because of medication that you might be taking. These medications may be prescription drugs to treat other illnesses or they may even be illegal drugs like cocaine. Another consideration to take into account is that the side effects from certain drugs may also be part of the causes of anxiety as well.

As we may never really know the exact reasons why anxiety develops the exact causes of anxiety are still a mystery. Hopefully one day we will understand this complaint and be able to treat it before it becomes a serious problem.

Currently, the month of October is designated as the official National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM). For over two decades, NBCAM has successfully educated women of all ages about early detection, treatment, and diagnosis of breast cancer. Non-profit organizations such as Karmanos Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, Susan G. Sitting at your desk, staring at your computer, doing some work. You’re on the phone with clients and reading your e-mail. From time to time, you’re checking your latest messages on MySpace.

You’re a great multi-tasker. Take a moment to get away from it all and take a lift.

Pilates instructor Alisa Wyatt, calls this exercise “The Elevator.” You can do this simple Pilates exercise sitting right at your desk to cinch your waist and keep your belly from hanging over.

Alisa says:

“Sit up tall and let your shoulders relax. Imagine your belly button is the elevator at the top of a ten-floor building. As you exhale, sink the elevator down to the 1st floor. Hold it there as you breathe lightly. Work up to holding to a count of 10. Do this exercise 3 times a day for a stronger waist in a week!”

When you’ve mastered holding your belly button on the 1st floor, try adding this:

“Sink the elevator to the 1st floor and then go from the 1st floor to the basement, quickly for a count of 50. This works the muscles in a different way.”

Be productive while getting your work responsibilities complete. Squeeze in an exercise and benefit those stomach muscles that wrap around your waist like a corset.

Work it and enjoy your work day.

Train Your Mind and the Body Will Follow

The mind is the master of the body. If we train and discipline our minds, the body will follow. Once the body and mind become focused and in tune, you will see that your whole life will seem to flow; like you are in the zone. In other words, you will not be fighting with yourself and good things will just seem to happen for you. We use this simple exercise in my martial arts school at the Academy of Kempo Martial Arts in Bellevue before we start training.

Here is an easy way to start training your mind:

First warm up your body so that you are not tired. A few minutes of light stretches will do the trick. Then sit very comfortably without loud music or distractions. (Can’t find a place? Try the bathroom, you only need 5 minutes :).

Start by placing your tongue on the roof of your mouth. Breathe in through your nose for a count of 4 or so. Then breathe out through your mouth for a count of 6 to 8. The out breath should always be longer than the in breath. Do this five to ten times. Focus on nothing but the count. Counting will give your mind something to focus on, which will help prevent the mind from wandering or being distracted. This simple exercise will re-energize you, re-focus you, and get your mind under control.

A few tips to go along with this breathing exercise:

1) Keep your back straight.

2) Eyes should remain open, but soften your vision. (Do not focus your eyes on anything specific)

3) Place your hands comfortably in your lap.

4) Breathe deep. Pull the air all the way to the bottom of your stomach.

5) Control the breath out. Don’t let the air just escape.

This is a very involved process and there are many reasons it works; too many to give you in one page. Just like aspirin, you may not know the chemical make up, but you know it gets rid of the headache. This exercise can get you focused, distress and unite the mind and body. It works if you do it. Try it for 2 weeks, for 3 to 5 minutes a day. You will be calmer and more focused than ever. Add some physical exercise, like martial arts, and you will get a one-two punch that can truly change your life.

We spend way to much time on everything and everyone but we seem to ignore ourselves. The time we spend on ourselves is less than most people spend brushing their teeth…. We really owe it to ourselves to take a little time for just ourselves. I hope you can take some time for yourself to recharge, because everything is a continuous cycle and just as mediation breathing is a cycle, so is your positive energy and if you feel good you are passing that to others and the cycle continues.

Alternative Medicine practitioners are realizing that healing herbs should be part of their arsenal against disease. The newest touted natural herb is Capsicum, found in cayenne pepper. It has many benefits whether taken internally or externally. When taken internally, capsicum is an antibacterial which will encourage healing and deflect infections while slowing the absorption of fat in the intestines to help fight obesity. Because this natural herbal remedy is a stimulant, it improves circulation. Capsicum will also stabilize blood pressure and lower cholesterol. Herbalists are finding capsicum is useful in fighting a variety of ailments.

It is difficult to pinpoint exactly when the herb cayenne pepper had its start as an herbal remedy. There are no writings on Capsicum in ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, or Persia. The best guess that historians are willing to put forward is that cayenne went to India and China some time in the 14th or 15th century. It is believed that Europe started cultivation around the 16th century. Today cayenne is still a popular herb in the food industry. Now because of well designed and implemented clinical studies it is widely accepted as an effective alternative medicine. The natural healing herb Capsicum contained in cayenne pepper is loaded with Vitamin A which is necessary for smooth skin and vision. The healing properties of Vitamin C are clearing blood clots, eliminating plaque from the arteries, healing wounds and fighting colds. By starving them of oxygen, capsicum causes tumor cells to die.

Capsicum can cause a burning sensation but in time you will get used to it. The active ingredients in the herbal remedy, Capsicum, stimulate the brain and salivary glands releasing endorphins into your body. Endorphins are nature’s natural painkiller giving us the feeling of pleasure. Capsicum is also the main ingredient in pain killing rubs for Arthritis and Diabetes nerve damage.

Many herbalists today recommend capsicum for such ailments as cold hands and feet, sluggish metabolisms, obesity and respiratory tract infections. Use it externally for arthritis, sore back muscles, rheumatism or sprains and bruises. One suggestion for cold feet is to wear a thin pair of socks, then get a thicker pair of socks, sprinkle the inside with cayenne pepper and put them on over the thin socks. The pepper will send a warm soothing sensation to the soles of your feet.

An interesting study was done to see if capsicum would irritate or cause ulceration in the intestines. On the contrary it was found that the herb did not harm the tract but sped up the healing of ulcers by secreting more mucosa, the protective lining of the intestines.

A very surprising result of many of the clinical tests is that capsicum raise the metabolic rate and is effective in burning the bodies fat. This has many implications for people with obesity problems. Early indications also show that capsicum slows the absorption of fat in the small intestine. These studies are on going but there are some weight loss products with capsicum that are available in your health food store.

As a tropical analgesic, capsicum, the natural herbal remedy has received wide attention by qualified health professionals. It has shown to relieve the pain of shingles as well as other skin ailments. The FDA has approved it to be used for these problems as well as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Studies are being done to see if the herb can be effective in treating psoriasis and fibromyalgia.

When using it topically a redness or burning sensation may sometimes occur. This will disappear in two to three weeks time. Once you have received control of the pain capsicum must be used continuously for the relief to be sustained.

If you are diabetic take 3 capsules a day to help bring down your blood sugar levels. Capsicum will affect the breakdown of carbohydrates which will control the fluctuation of sugar levels after eating meals. Of course, this is still being studied in clinics around the world.
